BRIDGWATER AND ALBION   29   HRFC   25

National 3 South

By 'cub reporter' Nigel Dade

Hav gained a well deserved and important bonus point with a second half performance that kept the small band of travelling supporters on the edge of their seats. They were so close to winning all the points!

Hav welcomed back Harry Heasman and Ali Ramus from injury, and Jon Barfoot to the bench.

There was a strong wind blowing down the pitch, and with misty rain in the air, Hav kicked off with the wind. Immediately the forwards took control and established a good position in the Bridgwater half.  A penalty awarded against Hav ended their initial effort, and Bridgwater made Hav pay for their misdemeanours, as from the resulting kick to the corner they drove Hav back for a try in the 8th minute, the conversion was missed, 5-0.

The home side made Hav pay again for some poor passages of play, when in the 12th minute they stole another Hav line out. They moved forward, lost the ball only to retrieve it from charging down a Hav kick , and run  the try in unopposed.  The conversion was missed, 10-0.

Hav reduced the deficit, with a penalty in the 17th minute by Sid Claffey who had taken up the kicking duties, 19 minutes gone 10-3.  This was a small respite as Hav were caught in possession, Bridgwater stole the ball on the half way line to again run in, with not a Hav player in sight. With the conversion again being missed it was 15-3.

At last Hav started to use the wind to their advantage, and took the play into the Bridgwater half, where they were awarded a number of penalties as Bridgwater were under pressure from the Hav forwards  who were dominating the Bridgwater pack. Sid Claffey converted one in the 23rd minute, 15-6 but missed two long efforts in the 25th  and 29th minutes.

With this pressure Hav were unlucky with a number of forward plays, but with another visit to the Bridgwater try line, Hav won a scrum in front of the Bridgwater posts only to knock on from it. The pack regrouped and won the resulting scrum against the head and Dylan Raubenheimer peeled off to score. Sid Claffey converted to make it 15-13, with 37 minutes gone.

Half time was looming and Bridgwater won a penalty for a high tackle in front of the post which was successfully converted which left it at 18-13 at  half time.

Hav needed to up their game in the second half, as they were now playing into the wind, however it was Bridgwater who opened the scoring when Hav collapsed the scrum in front of their post in the 43rd minute.  With the resulting penalty, the  score moved on to 21-13.

It was Bridgwater who again troubled the scorer next, with a good try by their three quarters and some poor tackling by Hav. It enabled them to score in the corner in the 46th minute. The conversion missed, 26-13 and Hav looked up against it.

Hav made some changes in the 51st minute with Tom Wells and Jon Barfoot coming on for Karl Randle and Andy Tart. These fresh legs made an immediate contribution, and Hav took the game to Bridgwater, with the forwards now controlling and moving with ease into the Bridgwater half with driving mauls. This resulted in Bridgwater having a player yellow carded (59th minute) for collapsing one of the mauls, which gave Hav more confidence to control the game.

With Hav in the Bridgwater half, Simon Cole released the ball to the backs, and Neil McGovern spotting a gap in front of him, broke through the Bridgwater line for a fine try in the 61st minute. Sid Claffey converted the try, 26 -20.

With Bridgwater down to 14 men, the Hav pack again took the game to them, with a number of driving mauls deep into the Bridgwater half, with one of them resulting in a try with Dylan Raubenheimer again emerging from the pile of players to claim it. The conversion missed and it was 26-25, with 13 minutes of the game remaining.

Hav increased the pressure on Bridgwater, and again used the successful driving maul, and moved towards the Bridgwater try line, with a number of fine forward plays.  It seemed only a matter of time before Hav would score the winning try!

But Bridgwater made a rare excursion into the Hav half, where they were awarded a penalty for Hav being offside. It was converted to make it 29-25, but there was still 3 minutes remaining.

Hav went straight on the attack and from the kick off, they again took control of the ball but only to  be knocked on deep in the Bridgwater half.  Bridgwater cleared their lines and this was the  last major play of the game. The final score was 29-25, but Hav did pick up a bonus point.

This was a great team effort, particularly in the second half, with the forwards taking control of the game. The result meant that Hav stay in 12th place, as both Barking and North Walsham also gained a bonus point. To say we must get lots of points from our remaining games is an understatement, but Hav can do it if they repeat the performances of their last two games!
