PETER CHARLTON & IAN WARD
|
Aged 78 years young, Peter died in The Rowans Hospice on the morning of Tuesday August 29th. Peter’s association with the club goes back to at least 1953, initially as a talented three quarter. Havant RFC was founded in 1951 so it is fair to say that Peter was certainly one of HRFC’s longest standing Former Players. Chairman Debbie Morgan paid Peter a visit at home shortly before he died. He asked her to say good bye to those he knew at the club and thanked everyone for the many happy memories he has of HRFC, as a player, a supporter and indeed a very generous benefactor. Peter had a sneak preview of the new shirts and liked what he saw, even if they are a little different to the style of shirt he wore as a player, as we can see above!
Ian Ward died on 14 July, finally succumbing to an illness he had been manfully battling against for a few years. In a 20 year plus association with the Club, Ian's large avuncular presence featured in every senior team within the club, from 1st XV to Mariners, and, in recent years, he was a staunch supporter at 'The Lane', an active member of the Former Players Association, and regular attendee at the exclusive 'Thursday night Club' in the downstairs bar. Our thoughts remain with his wife Jane and son Richard, who followed his father into rugby, starting with HRFC Colts and playing regularly in the 1st XV before achieving success at a more professional level.
